The Lazy Dream Ranch is a small private facility that sits on 160 acres of prime farming land 8 miles north of the city of Watertown in the northeastern Glacial Lakes Regional of South Dakota. We do not have a large or fancy facility. What we do have is an adequate beginning with an eye to selected expansion.
Our home and facilities sit atop the eastern hillside of a small valley overlooking the Big Sioux River, nestled amoungst eight acres of the total quarter section, and is covented by the city and state as the premiere location to place a flood control dam for the whole of the Upper Big Sioux Watershed Basin (expands over 12,000 acres). The surrounding area provides many miles of open riding amid the plains, complete with fabulous vistas. It is in this location that our family will celebrate a Century old farm in the summer of 2006 and where we live, raise our horses and farm, hopefully for the next Century....
We currently have a 42'x60' horse barn that includes five 10'x12' box stalls, a 42'x35' indoor work arena, tack and feed room area, work shop area and indoor hay/grain storage. We also have an old 12'x14' smaller barn (left by a previous renter and used as shelter) that we have added a 16'x20' attached run, connected on the east side by our outdoor hay/straw/grain storage and on the west side by a half acre tree belted pasture, which in turn is connected to a 100'x150' outdoor arena and four acre pasture area.
Since constructing our large barn, we have added running water and electricity to the barn, upgraded the current fencing from barbed wire to horse grade fencing and expanded the current pasture area to the north and to the west. We have installed an automatic waterer in the main pasture area and a freeze-free water faucet and electrical outlet bordering the outdoor arena and west pasture area.
Future expansion will include lights to the outdoor arena, additional fencing of pasture areas with lean-to shelters, a wash rack for horse bathing and a small foaling barn, complete with select, quality babies. Of course, if we ever get lucky and hit the lottery, the sky could be the limit on improved facilities!!!
